Coconut oil is easily absorbed by the skin and is therefore a great natural moisturiser. Because coconut oil contains lauric acid it has natural antibacterial properties. We use coconut oil as a natural moisturiser in the following ways.
Coconut oil is hard white solid at room temperature but melts to a clear liquid at or above body temperatures. We prefer to use raw virgin organic coconut oil as it is all natural and unrefined.
Apply as a whole body moisturiser after showering. Take half a tea-spoon of coconut oil at a time, rub between your hands to melt it and apply to your body. Use it to moisturise dry skin on your legs after shaving.
Coconut oil also works really well as a natural lip balm. Apply as needed to dry and chapped lips. It also tastes and smells great. People who regularly use lipstick or chap-sticks end up eating approximately two sticks every year. That's a lot of chemical emulsifiers, preservatives, colours, flavours and stabilisers to digest. Coconut oil is the more sensible alternative that, we believe, works just as well.
Coconut oil is great as a hair mask. It will give your hair a boost and leave it silky smooth and shiny after use. It is the inexpensive and all natural chemical free alternative to commercial hair masks.
Put a half tea spoon of coconut oil between your hands until it melts then take a strand of hair about a finger thick and apply from root to tip. Be sure to apply it evenly but not too much or it will drip. Once you have covered all of your hair, comb the oil through with a coarse comb then wrap your hair in a towel. Tie your hair up first, if necessary. Leave the oil in for a minimum of 40 minutes then wash with a gentle shampoo as per normal.
Coconut oil is a great moisturiser for hands. Because it is absorbed quickly it does not leave your hands greasy. We find it helps with dry cuticles and strengthens nails. Use one quarter of a teaspoon and rub into your hands, focusing on dry areas first.
